KaithalNine Nakshatras (Kunds)

Kaithal, also known as 'Kapisthal', is an ancient city of religion and salvation. Home to 102 Shiva Temples including 'Gyrah Rudri Mandir', this religious city is also known as 'Little Kashi', making it the second most important city after Banaras.

This pre-Mahabharta city is abode of the 'Nine Kunds' named after the nine planets. These are:

  1. Shukra Kund
  2. Budh Kund
  3. Veer Kund (Brahshpati Kund)
  4. Surya Kund (Bhadra Kund)
  5. Shani Kund (Diwal Wala Kund)
  6. Ketu Kund
  7. Chander Kund
  8. Rahu Kund
  9. Bhom Kund

Last four 'Kunds' have ceased to exist with the passage of time. First five Kunds, dating back to Mahabharta era, are present even today but are lying in a dilapidated condition and are filled with filth and dirty water.

Randeep Singh Surjewala has taken it upon himself to protect and resurrect these civilizational treasures by undertaking massive restoration work. Each one is described below:-

Shukra Kund

'Shukra Kund' is situated towards the west of Old Civil Hospital, Kaithal. It is rectangle shaped with ghats on all sides and a 'BAWRI' on eastern side. Around 250-300 years ago, Seth Chhaju Mal had constructed a temple of Lord Shiva at this place. It is, therefore, also named as 'CHHAJU KUND'. It is situated in an area of approximately 2.5 acres. There are some carvings on the walls of the Shiva Temple till date. Kund is in a dilapidated condition and is being restored at a cost of Rs.49.90 lakh. Foundation stone for commencement of construction was laid by Ch. Shamsher Singh Surjewala and Randeep Singh Surjewala on 17th January, 2011.

Budh Kund

This Kund is situated on the northern side of Shukra Kund. It has staircase for bathing purposes on three sides. On the western side is a temple of 'Budheshwar Mahadev' with a black colour 'Shivalinga' in its centre. Kund is in a dilapidated condition and same is being reconstructed at a cost of Rs.19 lakh. Ch. Shamsher Singh Surjewala and Randeep Singh Surjewala laid the foundation stone on 17th January, 2011.

Veer Kund (Brahshpati Kund)

This Kund is situated in an area of 2 acres and is in comparatively better condition. It has two 'ghats' on the western side, one of which is for women. Restoration work is being undertaken at a cost of Rs.24.30 lakh. Foundation stone for commencement of construction was laid by Ch. Shamsher Singh Surjewala and Randeep Singh Surjewala on 17th January, 2011.

Surya Kund (Bhadra Kund)

This is the biggest Kund spread over nearly 4 acres. In east of the Kund is 'BASAU GHAT', towards the west is 'PHOOLAN DEVI GHAT' and in the middle is 'MANSA GHAT'. This Kund needed urgent restoration. Restoration is being undertaken at a cost of Rs.194.25 lakh. Ch. Shamsher Singh Surjewala and Randeep Singh Surjewala laid the foundation stone on 27th August, 2010.

Shani Kund (Diwal Wala Kund)

Some restoration work has been undertaken of this Kund by Shri Bhagwan Dass Pujari. 'SHANI TEMPLE' exists next to the Kund. At the centre of the Temple, there exists an idol of Lord Shani in black marble. Restoration work of the same is being undertaken at a cost of Rs.16.10 lakh. Foundation stone for commencement of construction was laid by Ch. Shamsher Singh Surjewala and Randeep Singh Surjewala on 17th January, 2011.

These Kunds have not only historical significance but also are modern day recharge structures for underground water. Following works are being undertaken as part of the restoration strategy in these five Kunds:

  1. Stone pitching of sides of the Kunds;
  2. Construction of parapet wall around the Kunds
  3. Construction of boundary wall of the Kunds
  4. Installation of lights and sound system around the Kunds
  5. Restoration of old ghats of the Kund and construction of new ghats;
  6. Construction of toilets for pilgrims visiting the Kunds
  7. Ensuring availability of water by installation of tubewells or making provision for canal based water course upto the Kunds.
